Day Trip — 1.5 hours from Melbourne

Mornington Peninsula Day Trip

The Mornington Peninsula is Melbourne's backyard and it earns the designation — hot springs, serious wine, the dramatic ocean coast that most visitors never find, and Pt Leo Estate's sculpture park spread across a hillside above the bay. The mistake most people make is the bay beaches in summer. The ocean side of the peninsula is better, wilder, and half the crowd.

01

Peninsula Hot Springs

Fingal / RyeBook ahead

Thermal mineral springs in a bushland setting 90 minutes from Melbourne — not a day spa, actual geothermal springs.

The hillside pools have views across the peninsula. The cave pool is worth the uphill walk. Dawn Bathing (opens 7:30am) is the locals' session. Book well ahead for weekends.

Local tipDawn Bathing or weekday mid-morning. School holidays are genuinely difficult — try to avoid.
02

Pt Leo Estate

MerricksBook 2 weeks ahead

Winery, restaurant, and one of the most serious outdoor sculpture parks in Australia — all in the same property.

The sculpture park is free with a restaurant booking. The Saturday terrace lunch is one of the best long lunches you can do near Melbourne. The estate pinot noir is the thing to drink.

Local tipBook two weeks ahead for Saturday lunch. The terrace tables are best — ask when booking.
03

Cape Schanck Coastal Walk

Cape SchanckWild coast

The ocean side of the peninsula — wild, windswept, the Southern Ocean below.

The walk runs along boardwalks over rock platforms. The Cape Schanck Lighthouse at the end has a tearoom. Almost nobody here compared to the Sorrento and Portsea beaches.

Local tipAny time of year. Winter is spectacular — wild seas, completely empty. Check wind warnings.
04

Sorrento and Portsea

Sorrento / Portsea

The towns at the tip of the peninsula — the ocean side is always better than the bay.

Sorrento for the main street and the back beach. Portsea for the clifftop walk and the Portsea Hotel for a drink with bay views. Worth it if you're not there on a 38°C Saturday.

Local tipGo on a weekday in summer or any day in autumn. The back beaches are always quieter than the bay.
05

Red Hill and the wineries

Red HillBook the lunch

The cool-climate wine heartland of the Mornington Peninsula.

Pinot noir and chardonnay primarily. Stonier, Ten Minutes by Tractor, and Montalto are the consistent names. Ten Minutes by Tractor has the best food of any cellar door on the peninsula.

Local tipPick one cellar door and do it properly rather than rushing three. Ten Minutes by Tractor for food and wine combined.
