Marvel Stadium gives you two main planning styles.
You can stay close to Docklands and keep the event as the centre of the plan, or you can use the CBD first and walk or travel in when it is time.
The CBD gives more spread-out food options and can work better when people are arriving from different directions. Docklands keeps the movement simple but can feel more exposed in bad weather and busier near event time.
Neither is always better. The right choice depends on weather, group size, appetite and how much time you have before the event. A better Marvel Stadium day decides the food area, meeting point and exit strategy before the event starts. PlanSorted helps build the plan around timing, weather, transport and who you are going with.

Four event day versions for different needs.
Marvel is the west end, and that is its advantage in finals month
Marvel Stadium sits at the Docklands end of the grid, on the opposite side of the city from the MCG and Melbourne Park. Through September that is worth something: when an AFL final has the east end and the sports precinct at capacity, the walk from Southern Cross to Marvel is unaffected, and so is the food around Spencer Street and the north-western laneways.
The exception is Southern Cross itself, which carries both the regional and the metropolitan load. On a day with a final at the G and an event at Marvel, the station is the pinch point rather than the streets. Come in early and leave from a different platform end than the one you arrived at.
Friday 25 September 2026 is a Victorian public holiday, the day before the AFL Grand Final. The parade that morning runs on the far side of the city, so Docklands and the west end are the calm half of Melbourne — genuinely the best part of town to be in that day. Transport runs a holiday timetable and some CBD food closes with the offices, but the Docklands venues that trade for stadium crowds will be open.
For the rest of the month, check the MCG fixture as well as your own. Two large crowds in one city on one evening changes how long everything takes, even at opposite ends of it.
Southern Cross is the pinch point, not the streets. Arrive early, leave from the other end.
The Marvel Stadium mistakes.
- Do not assume central means effortless.
- Do not leave food until everyone is near the stadium and hungry.
- Do not use a vague meeting point on a big event night.
- Do not make the plan depend on a single venue.
- Do not ignore weather around Docklands.
- Do not book something too tight after the event ends.
Give it the event time, who is coming, where people are starting, whether you want food before or after and how quickly you want to leave.
It will build the event day around the crowd.
